How to Choose the Right Wooden Table Top for Your WFH Setup

Working from home has become the norm for many professionals, and having a well-designed workspace is crucial for productivity and comfort.

If you value quality and aesthetics, incorporating a wooden table top into your work-from-home (WFH) setup can bring timeless elegance and natural charm to your environment.

But with so many different options for wooden table tops out there, how do you know what’s best?

In this article, we’ll walk you through the process of choosing a durable wooden table top that aligns with your needs and adds a touch of sophistication to your workspace.

Durability

The number one thing you need to be thinking about is durability. You’d want to get a table that lasts and can stay with your workspace for at least a few years.
(and handle whatever you throw/accidentally drop on it)

The way to assess durability is using a measurement tool called the Janka Hardness Scale Test. Woods like Walnut or Acacia have a high Janka Hardness Scale rating and would be ideal for table tops as they’re more resistant to wear and denting.

Avoid woods with ratings below 800, as they may not be suitable for long-lasting furniture.

In choosing materials for all of our table tops at Omnidesk, ensuring the wood selections are very durable is our primary design requirement. For example, our Signature Black/White table tops made from the highest grade of Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) wood, which have a Janka Hardness Scale rating of around 1200.

Craftsmanship

Craftsmanship plays a vital role in the lifespan of your wooden table top. Nobody wants to invest in a high-grade wooden table only to find out there were some excessive cracks, voids or knots that irritate you while you work.

Be sure to get a feel of the surfaces, the wood grain, the finishing and smoothness of the edges before purchasing.

The passionate artisans on the omnidesk team have years of woodworking experience and strive to preserve the natural beauty and strength of the wooden surfaces. If you’d like to get a feel of the craftsmanship, you’re always welcome to visit our showroom at Suntec City to experience it yourself.

Protective Finishing

As important as the wood selection is for durability, a good finish enhances the durability further of your wooden table top.

Seek a durable finish that offers resistance to water rings, scratches, and other common hazards associated with everyday use.

For example, at Omnidesk, our Walnut table top undergoes meticulous pressure treatment and kiln-drying processes, ensuring its natural beauty and strength are preserved for years to come.

Your Personal Style

While the practical aspects matter, aesthetics do too. You’re probably going work at your desk for many hours a day.

Having a workspace you’re proud of and getting a style that works with your aesthetic is a gamechanger.

There’s plenty of tabletops to choose from, across various colours and wood types, and we’d recommend you draw inspiration from other workspaces to determine the theme you’d like to go for. We’ve got a collection of inspiration pictures here, which you can check out.

Many of our customers love the Walnut and Pheasantwood tones. Some going for a more minimal aesthetic would opt for the clean white and black table tops. Hevea - Natural is a great option for those looking for a lighter, brighter workspace concept. And for the bold, there’s the Ichi Collection with custom, artisanal desks which we’d recommend you check out.

By understanding these key considerations, you can make an educated decision when choosing and assessing a durable wooden table top that meets your requirements for quality, aesthetics, and ergonomics.

The right wooden table top is more than just a piece of furniture—it's a statement of your commitment to quality, functionality, and well-being in your WFH journey.

If you need someone to talk to in discussing your options, you can always drop by our showroom at Suntec City to have a chat, and look and feel the desks yourself.
